- Built
as the "S.S. Castro",
a cargo transport vessel, 1062 tons,
measuring 220 x 32 x 12 ft for the Wilson Line of Hull
- She
was powered by a triple-expansion engine and two boilers generating 106h.p.
- Captured
by the German Navy in August 1914 she was renamed the "S.M.S
Libau".
- In
1916 she masqueraded as the Norwegian
steamer "S.S. Aud" loaded
with 20,000 rifles, a number of machine guns, and amunition bound for Ireland
to support the Easter Rising and Roger Casement.
- Due
to a number of factors the transfer of arms did not take place. The "Aud"
was trapped by a blockade of British ships and was under escort towards Cork Harbour
when the the German captain and crew scuttled the ship.
- Captain
Spindler and crew were interned until the end of WW1.
- During
WW2 the wreck was thought to be a U-Boat and was heavily depth charged.
- Wreck
was re-located in 1971.
